Our Stance On Cryptocurrency And Market Manipulation

Recently, we've seen cryptocurrencies and meme coins appear that track, trade against, or otherwise attempt to tie themselves to the price or volume of items in our games. We want to be clear about where we stand.

Why this matters:

When real-world currency is linked to in-game item prices, real money starts to influence our economies and people are incentivised to act with the intention of real financial gain. We consider this a form of real-world trading, and in practice it is often used as a way to launder gold that has already been traded for real money.

It also drives market manipulation. When people have a financial stake in whether an item's price rises or falls, they have every incentive to push it in the direction that pays them, regardless of what that does to everyone else. We don't believe this adds anything positive to the experience of our players or our games.

What is not allowed:

Using cryptocurrency or meme coins to trade against, bet on, or profit from the price of in-game items in any of our products is not permitted. This includes manipulating item prices for any real-world gain, including positions taken on whether a price will go up or down.

What happens if you do:

We are taking a zero-tolerance approach. Anyone found engaging in this kind of market manipulation will have action taken against their accounts.

Whether a given activity constitutes malicious market manipulation is at Jagex's sole discretion. Actions that have unintended consequences for the economy may also result in action against your account, the severity of which will be proportionate to the suspected intent of the user(s).

We are unwavering in protecting the integrity of our game economies and doing what is best for the majority of our players. Bad actors looking to profiteer in real money have no place in shaping the value of the items you earn in our games, and we will continue to act against anyone who tries to introduce it.
